The PDF format (Portable Document Format) created by Adobe is the world's most popular, reliable and recognized international standard for exchanging, viewing and managing electronic documents. Adobe is the copyright owner of the PDF definition. Adobe has generously published the PDF file specifications and permits other organisations to create their own PDF writers and readers. Mac OS-X comes equipped with excellent tools for making PDF files. Same for most desktop and server versions of Linux. To enable your Windoze computer to create PDF files, simply download and install both of these 2 utilities: With these 2 utilities aboard, you should be able to turn any report or document into a PDF file simply by selecting the CutePDF "printer" and printing as normal. (Some versions of obscure programs such as em-YOB may not be able to do this correctly.) Windoze 2000/XP users should follow the instructions and install with Administrator rights. Windoze Vista and even Windoze 7 might work too. For more heavy duty work, you can easily manipulate pdf files (including merging, combining, splittting, and encrypting) using the free toolkits pdftkBuilder or pdftk. To view and print PDF files, Adobe provides a free Acrobat® Reader. There's Acrobat versions for Linux, Mac, Windoze, and other systems. You can get the latest Acrobat Reader here. To install a free Linux PDF server, my old notes can still be found here. Sid Steward's excellent book "PDF Hacks" can be found here. |
